HPV Vaccination for Adults: It's Not Just for Teenagers

HPV vaccination is now available for adults who missed the school programme. Learn about the benefits and who should consider getting vaccinated.

HPV Vaccination for Adults: It's Not Just for Teenagers

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is one of the most significant cancer prevention tools available. While the NHS programme focuses on teenagers, many adults missed out—and may still benefit from vaccination.

At Pulteney Pharmacy, we offer private HPV vaccination for adults who want protection.

What is HPV?

HPV is a group of over 200 related viruses, spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact. It's incredibly common—most sexually active people will contract at least one type during their lifetime.

While most HPV infections clear naturally, some types can cause:

High-Risk Types (Cancer-Causing)

  • Cervical cancer
  • Throat and mouth cancers
  • Anal cancer
  • Penile cancer
  • Vaginal and vulval cancers

Low-Risk Types

  • Genital warts
  • Respiratory papillomatosis

Why Adults Should Consider HPV Vaccination

Missed the School Programme?

The NHS HPV vaccination programme began in 2008 for girls and expanded to boys in 2019. Many adults never had the opportunity.

Protection Against Multiple Cancers

The vaccine protects against the HPV types responsible for:

  • ~70-90% of cervical cancers
  • ~90% of anal cancers
  • ~70% of oropharyngeal cancers
  • ~70% of vaginal and vulval cancers
  • Most genital warts cases

Changing Relationships

Even if you've been with the same partner for years, circumstances change. Vaccination provides peace of mind for the future.

Already Had HPV?

The vaccine protects against multiple HPV types. Even if you've had one infection, it can protect against others.

About the HPV Vaccine (Gardasil 9)

The current vaccine protects against 9 HPV types:

  • Types 16 and 18 (cause most HPV-related cancers)
  • Types 6 and 11 (cause most genital warts)
  • Types 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58 (cause additional cancers)

Vaccination Schedule

Ages 15 and over:

  • 3 doses over 6 months
  • Dose 1: Day 0
  • Dose 2: 2 months later
  • Dose 3: 6 months after first dose

Effectiveness

Studies show Gardasil 9 is:

  • Nearly 100% effective at preventing diseases caused by the vaccine HPV types
  • Effective across all age groups studied
  • Long-lasting (possibly lifelong, though research is ongoing)

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

We recommend HPV vaccination for:

  • Adults who missed the school programme
  • Anyone up to age 45 (some evidence supports vaccination beyond this)
  • Men who have sex with men (higher risk of HPV-related cancers)
  • People with HIV or weakened immune systems
  • Anyone wanting protection regardless of relationship status

Not Recommended For

  • Pregnant women (can be given after pregnancy)
  • Those with severe allergies to vaccine components
  • People currently experiencing severe illness (delay until recovered)

Common Questions

"I'm in a long-term relationship—do I need it?" Possibly. Your current partner may have HPV without knowing. And if circumstances change, you'll have protection.

"I've already had abnormal smear results—is it too late?" No. The vaccine can still protect against HPV types you haven't encountered yet.

"Will it cure existing HPV?" No. It prevents new infections but doesn't treat existing ones.

"What about side effects?" Common side effects include injection site pain, headache, and mild fever. Serious side effects are extremely rare.

Is Adult HPV Vaccination Worth It?

Consider the stakes: HPV causes thousands of cancer cases annually in the UK. Vaccination is a safe, effective way to significantly reduce your risk.

While nothing is 100%, protecting yourself against the leading causes of several preventable cancers is a powerful choice.
